If your rankings wobbled mid-month and you went hunting for a Google algorithm update in July 2026 to blame, you will not have found one. Google confirmed no core update and no spam update all month. The last confirmed release, the June spam update, finished on 26 June.
That does not mean nothing happened. Four changes landed in July that will affect how UK businesses get found, and none of them were ranking updates. One carries a September deadline that could quietly cut your search traffic if you ignore it.
Here is what mattered, and what to do about each.
Key Takeaways
- No confirmed Google algorithm update in July 2026. Volatility around 11 July was unconfirmed chatter, not an announced release.
- Cloudflare split AI bot controls into three categories on 1 July, free for every customer. Defaults change on 15 September, and a careless setting can block Googlebot.
- Google’s generative AI controls and reports in Search Console started reaching sites outside the UK. UK sites got them first, so most British businesses can already see this data.
- Alphabet’s Q2 results showed Search advertising up 17%. AI answers are not killing search demand, but they are widening the gap between ranking and getting clicked.
- ChatGPT accounts for roughly 92% of trackable AI referral traffic, though AI discovery inside Google is larger than all standalone chatbots combined.
Was there a Google algorithm update in July 2026?
No. Google confirmed no core update and no spam update during July 2026. The June 2026 spam update ran from 24 to 26 June and closed before the month began. Any ranking movement you saw in July came from unannounced adjustments, seasonal demand, or something on your own site.
Search Engine Roundtable noted chatter about volatility around 11 July, but community discussion was unusually quiet and Google never confirmed a release.
Google also clarified in its documentation that a self-referencing canonical tag belongs on the canonical page itself. Not new advice, but now written down.
What this means for UK SMEs: resist the urge to rewrite pages in response to an update that did not happen. If traffic dropped in July, check the obvious causes first: a site change, a broken redirect, a seasonal dip, or a competitor’s new page. Annotate your analytics with any changes you made, so next time you can separate your own doing from Google’s.
What did Cloudflare change on 1 July, and why does it matter?
Cloudflare gave every customer, including free accounts, three separate switches for AI bot traffic: Search, Agent and Training. You can now allow crawling that sends you visitors while blocking crawling that trains models. From 15 September 2026, defaults change for new domains, and Training and Agent bots are blocked on pages that display ads.
The detail that catches people out sits in Cloudflare’s own announcement: multi-purpose crawlers such as Googlebot are judged on all of their behaviours. Block Training, and you may block your search crawler too.
What this means for UK SMEs: if your site sits behind Cloudflare, and a large number of UK small business sites do, open your bot settings this month. Confirm Search is allowed. Decide deliberately on Agent and Training rather than letting a default decide for you in September. Ten minutes now protects the organic traffic that funds everything else.

Can UK businesses now see how they perform in AI search?
Yes, and UK sites got there first. Google’s generative AI performance reports and its opt-out control in Search Console launched to a subset of UK websites on 3 June, following engagement with the Competition and Markets Authority. During July, Search Engine Roundtable reported the controls appearing on sites outside the UK as well.
The report shows impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date. It does not yet show clicks.
Google has been clear that opting out is not a ranking signal for ordinary search results, in its own words, but sites that opt out receive no traffic or impressions from generative AI features.
What this means for UK SMEs: check whether the Generative AI section has appeared in your Search Console performance reports. If it has, you have a visibility baseline most businesses in other markets still lack. Use it to spot the mismatch that matters: pages with healthy ordinary impressions but almost no AI impressions are usually pages that are hard for a machine to extract a clean answer from.
For nearly every commercial site, leaving the toggle set to include is the right call. Opting out removes you from the surface your customers increasingly use.
Did AI search hurt Google’s advertising revenue?
Not so far. Alphabet reported second quarter results on 22 July. Search and other advertising revenue grew 17% year on year, and Sundar Pichai said AI Mode has passed one billion monthly active users since its global expansion, with AI features sending billions of clicks to websites every week.
Pichai’s published remarks from the earnings call also confirmed that AI Overviews and AI Mode now operate as one search experience rather than two separate surfaces.
Treat the framing with appropriate caution. This is Google reading its own numbers, and it has every reason to present AI as additive.
What this means for UK SMEs: search demand is not shrinking, so budget cuts based on the idea that search is dying are premature. The harder problem is that ranking and getting clicked have come apart. A page can hold position three, keep its impressions, and still lose clicks because the answer sat above it. Track clicks and enquiries, not positions, and judge your SEO spend on booked work.
Where does AI referral traffic actually come from?
Overwhelmingly from ChatGPT. A study published in July by Previsible, covered by Search Engine Land, analysed 6.77 million AI-driven sessions across 166 Google Analytics properties between November 2024 and May 2026. ChatGPT accounted for 92.4% of trackable referrals from standalone AI platforms.
Perplexity fell sharply from its early 2025 peak. Copilot all but disappeared. Claude grew quickly from a tiny base.
The more useful finding is buried underneath. The researchers estimate that AI discovery inside Google, through AI Overviews and AI Mode, drives more AI-influenced traffic than every standalone chatbot combined, even though it does not appear as a referral in your analytics.
One caveat worth keeping: this is a single panel, weighted towards US sites, and other studies using different panels have reported a less concentrated picture. Treat the direction as reliable and the exact percentages as indicative.
What this means for UK SMEs: you do not need a separate strategy for every chatbot. You need clean, extractable content that answers real customer questions, plus a way to see when AI sends someone your way. Set up a referral segment in GA4 for the main AI domains so you have a baseline before your competitors do. Then judge those sessions on enquiries, not volume.
Our content structure guide explains how to format pages so answers can be lifted cleanly.
Your priority actions for August
| Action | Why it matters | Time needed |
|---|---|---|
| Check your Cloudflare AI bot settings | Defaults change on 15 September and can block search crawlers | 10 minutes |
| Open the Generative AI report in Search Console | Establishes your AI visibility baseline while the data is still new | 20 minutes |
| Build a GA4 segment for AI referrals | You cannot value a channel you are not measuring | 30 minutes |
| Rewrite the opening of your five most commercial pages | Direct answers in the first 100 words are what AI systems lift | Half a day |
| Annotate any site changes you make | Separates your own effects from Google’s next update | Ongoing |
Pick one. A single change you actually finish beats five you start.
Want a second opinion on where your search visibility stands?
Most of the fixes above take under an hour. The harder question is which ones will move revenue for your business specifically, and that depends on your market, your margins and where your enquiries currently come from.
