Eight percent. That is how often people clicked a traditional search result when an AI summary appeared, against 15 percent when it did not, according to Pew Research Center’s analysis of US browsing data. Ranking first no longer guarantees the visit. So for most UK businesses the useful question is not whether this is fair. It is how to rank in Google AI Overviews, so you are the business being summarised and recommended at the top of the page. This guide covers what AI Overviews are, how Google decides what goes inside them, and the page structure that makes your answers easy to lift.
Key takeaways
- AI Overviews are built from Google’s normal search index, so standard SEO decides whether you are even eligible.
- Google’s own documentation says no special markup, files or “AI optimisation” tricks are required.
- Pages that already rank well are the pool Google draws from. Organic visibility comes first, citation second.
- Self-contained answers of 40 to 60 words under question-led headings are the format most easily lifted.
- Search Console now has a dedicated generative AI report, but it shows impressions only, not clicks.
- Treat citations as brand placement with a traffic bonus, and measure them accordingly.
What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of many results pages, above the organic links. They synthesise information from several web pages and cite those pages with links. Google describes them as a way to get the gist of a complicated question quickly, and a jumping off point for exploring further.
They do not appear on every search. In Pew’s study, 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary, 88% of those summaries cited three or more sources, and the typical summary ran to 67 words.
Two commercial points follow from that. Being one of three or four cited sources is realistic. And 67 words is not much room, so the passage Google lifts has to be tight.

How does Google choose what appears in an AI Overview?
Google builds AI Overviews from its existing search index using retrieval-augmented generation, which means the same core ranking and quality systems apply. Google states that its generative AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, and that SEO best practices remain relevant. There is no separate AI index deciding who gets quoted.
Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may also use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response.
That has a direct effect on content strategy. Google is not matching one keyword to one page. It is assembling an answer from several angles at once. A page that covers the main question plus the obvious follow-ups gives it more to work with than a page targeting a single phrase.
Do you need special AI optimisation to rank in AI Overviews?
No. Google’s guide to optimising for generative AI features tells site owners to prioritise effective SEO over “AEO/GEO hacks”, and to ignore tactics like chunking content, creating llms.txt files, or pursuing inauthentic mentions. Google also confirms it does not use llms.txt or similar files for Search at all.
We sell answer engine optimisation, so it is worth being straight about this. There is no secret markup. What there is, is a formatting discipline that makes your best answers easy for a model to extract, and a topical depth that makes you the obvious source. Both of those help human readers too, which is why they hold up when the guidance changes.
The businesses losing out are not the ones missing a trick. They are the ones with vague, padded pages that never answer the question in one place.
How do you rank in Google AI Overviews?
To rank in Google AI Overviews, first earn a genuine organic position for the query, then structure the page so one passage answers that question completely on its own. Use question-led headings, put the direct answer immediately beneath, keep it specific, and cover the related subquestions on the same page.
The answer block checklist
- One question per H2, phrased the way a customer would ask it
- A 40 to 60 word direct answer as the first paragraph under that heading
- No “as we discussed above”, so the passage stands alone if lifted
- Specifics over adjectives: prices, timescales, processes, numbers you can stand behind
- Supporting detail, examples and nuance after the answer, not before
- Related follow-up questions covered on the same page
- A named author with real credentials and a clear last-updated date
Imagine a 12-person commercial cleaning firm in Croydon. A page headed “How much does office cleaning cost in London?” that opens with a real price range and what drives it has a chance of being cited. A page headed “Our Services” that mentions cleaning eleven times does not.
“I spent seven years marketing in facilities management and property before founding Lobo Digital, and the buying questions have barely changed. What has changed is where they get asked. Procurement leads who once sent three email enquiries now ask an AI for a shortlist first.” – Marcus, Founder of Lobo Digital
Does schema markup help you appear in AI Overviews?
Schema markup does not directly place you in an AI Overview, and Google has not named it as a requirement for AI features. What it does is remove ambiguity about your entities, services, reviews, locations and FAQs, and support the rich results that strengthen the organic visibility you need first.
So treat schema as infrastructure rather than a lever. Organisation, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and Article markup, applied accurately, are worth having. Marking up content that does not exist on the page is not.
How do you measure AI Overview visibility?
Start in Search Console. In June 2026 Google launched dedicated Search generative AI performance reports, giving site owners a separate view of impressions within generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus generative AI features in Discover. The report shows impressions, not clicks, so it answers “am I in there” rather than “what did it earn”.
Fill the gap with three cheap measures. Track branded search volume over time, since AI citations tend to lift it. Add “How did you hear about us?” to your enquiry form with an AI option. And check your own money queries monthly, by hand, to see who is being cited instead of you.
The honest commercial framing: an AI Overview citation is closer to a billboard than a click. Pew found that clicks on links inside the summaries themselves accounted for around 1% of visits. The value is being named as the answer while your competitors are not.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews reduce click-through rate?
The evidence points that way. Pew’s US data showed users clicked a traditional result on 8% of searches with an AI summary, against 15% without one. UK patterns may differ, and informational queries are hit harder than transactional ones. Expect fewer clicks on “what is” content and steadier performance on pages with clear buying intent.
Can small businesses appear in AI Overviews?
Yes. Eligibility is not based on domain size, and most summaries cite several sources, which leaves room beyond the big brands. The realistic route for a smaller firm is depth on a narrow topic: your sector, your service area, your specific customer questions. Competing on broad national head terms is much harder.
How is this different from a featured snippet?
A featured snippet lifts one passage from one page and links to it. An AI Overview generates new text from several sources and cites them. Snippet-friendly writing, meaning direct answers under clear headings, helps with both. We cover the overlap in more detail in our guide to featured snippets in 2026.
Do I need to rank on page one already?
Practically, yes. AI Overviews draw on content that Google’s core systems already rate for the query, so weak organic performance is the constraint to fix first. If you are not visible in the top ten, invest in fundamentals such as crawlability, page speed, internal linking and genuine topical coverage before worrying about answer formatting.
How long does it take to appear in an AI Overview?
Assume months, not weeks. Google has to recrawl and reassess the page, and your underlying ranking has to be strong enough to qualify. Reformatting an existing page that already ranks in positions four to ten is the fastest route. Brand new pages on competitive topics take as long as they always did.

AI Overviews are one surface. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot are others, and the work that wins them overlaps heavily. That work is what our GEO and AEO practice exists to do: audit where you currently appear, restructure the pages that should, and measure the shift in citations and enquiries.
