You rank on page one for the service you sell. A facilities manager types a longer question into Google, gets a written answer with three suppliers named in it, and calls one of them. Your business was not in the answer, so you never knew the search happened.
That is the problem Google AI Mode creates for small businesses. It is not a separate search engine and it does not replace Google. It is a conversational tab inside Google Search that answers complex questions in prose, with a handful of links, and it has been live in the UK since July 2025. This guide explains what Google AI Mode is, how it differs from AI Overviews, what it means for your enquiries and what to change this quarter.
Key takeaways
- Google AI Mode is a conversational search tab that writes one answer from many searches run at once. It reached UK users on 28 July 2025.
- It is different from AI Overviews: Overviews sit on a normal results page, AI Mode replaces the results page with a conversation.
- Pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google says no special markup or file is required.
- Firms that already rank well tend to be the ones AI tools cite: in our study of 95 UK firms the correlation was 0.88.
- Search Console now shows AI Mode and AI Overview impressions in a dedicated report, so visibility can be tracked by page.

What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is a tab in Google Search that answers a question with a written response instead of a list of ten links. It breaks one question into many smaller searches, runs them at the same time, and combines the results into a single answer with supporting links. It supports follow-up questions in the same conversation, so a buyer can narrow down suppliers without starting again.
Google calls the technique “query fan-out”. Ask AI Mode which commercial cleaning companies in Leeds handle medical sites, and it may search for accreditations, sector experience, coverage areas and reviews separately, then write one answer from what it finds.
AI Mode began rolling out in the UK on 28 July 2025, after the US and India, and appears as a tab on the results page and in the Google app on Android and iOS, as Search Engine Land reported at launch. Google said at the time that early users were asking questions two to three times longer than traditional searches. A longer question carries more detail about the buyer’s need, and the answer rewards the supplier whose website matches it.
It sits inside the search engine most UK buyers already use. Statcounter data shows Google accounts for around 91% of UK search engine use, with Bing in second place at about 6% (Statcounter). Ofcom reports that four in five UK adults (82%) use Google Search. That is why we treat AI search optimisation as the next stage of SEO, not a separate discipline.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are short AI summaries that appear above the normal results on some searches. AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational view that you choose to open, where the whole page is an AI answer and follow-up questions are expected. Google says the two can use different models and techniques, so they will not always show the same answer or the same links.
AI Overviews are already common in the UK. Ofcom says about 30% of searches now show AI overviews, and 53% of UK adults say they see these summaries often (Ofcom Online Nation 2025).

Here is the practical difference for a small business owner.
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above normal results, on some searches | Its own tab, chosen by the searcher |
| Format | A short summary | A full written answer and conversation |
| Follow-up questions | Limited | Expected, in the same session |
| Best suited to | Quick factual questions | Complex comparisons and research |
| Normal blue links | Still on the page below | Replaced by links inside the answer |
| Tracked in Search Console | Yes, in the generative AI report | Yes, in the generative AI report |
How does AI Mode choose which businesses to show?
AI Mode chooses businesses from pages Google has already indexed, using its core ranking systems to fetch relevant pages before the model writes the answer. Google’s guidance is that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that no extra markup or special file is needed. Beyond that, Google does not publish how sources are picked for each answer.
What we know. AI Mode grounds its answers in Google’s index, so a page that is not indexed cannot be cited. It runs many related searches for one question, so a site that answers the follow-up questions a buyer would ask has more chances to appear. And Google has said files such as llms.txt and rewriting content specially for AI do nothing for visibility in Search.
What we do not know. Google does not reveal the individual searches it runs, which pages it favours inside an answer, or how often your business is mentioned without a link. Anyone who tells you they can guarantee a place in AI Mode answers is selling something that does not exist.
Our take: AI Mode rewards what good SEO always did
AI Mode does not end search. It rewards the same things good SEO always did: clear answers, proof and a name buyers already trust. Our own research points the same way. Across 95 B2B service firms, the ones that rank for more search terms are also the ones AI assistants link to: the rank correlation is 0.88 (our Study 100 of 95 UK firms).
That is good news, because the work is familiar. We have seen what fundamentals alone can do: monthly organic visits rose from around 40 to over 1,000 within a month once the basics were fixed on one commercial cleaning site.
These results were achieved by Marcus Lobow, some in-house as a senior marketer and some through Lobo Digital.
Not sure whether AI tools name your business when buyers ask about your service?
Our audit tests the questions your buyers actually ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and shows who gets named instead of you.
What happens to clicks and enquiries?
AI Mode will send fewer casual clicks to most websites, because the answer is on the page. The clicks that remain tend to come from buyers who have already compared options and want to act. For a service business, that can mean less traffic but better enquiries, provided your site is one of the sources the answer links to.
This is the same zero-click pattern AI Overviews started, and we cover the wider strategy in how to win customers when nobody visits your site. The shift is not only inside Google either. ChatGPT drew 1.8 billion UK visits in the first eight months of 2025, up from 368 million a year earlier, according to Ofcom.
As Marcus Lobow, founder of Lobo Digital, puts it: “Search is moving from finding links to generating answers. Whether you use AI tools yourself does not matter. Your prospective clients already use ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google Gemini to research, summarise and compare service providers before they ever land on a website.”

The commercial question to ask is not “how much traffic did we lose?” but “are we in the answer when a buyer with a real need asks?” That is why we report on enquiries and cost per lead rather than impressions.
What should a small business change now?
Start with five changes that help in normal search, AI Overviews and AI Mode at the same time. None needs a new website or special software. Each one makes it easier for Google to understand what you do, where you do it and why a buyer should trust you.
- Check your key pages are indexed. Use the Pages report in Search Console. A service page set to noindex, or blocked by a migration, cannot appear in any AI answer. Our technical SEO checklist covers the checks in order.
- Answer the follow-up questions on your service pages. Price ranges, coverage areas, response times, contract lengths and accreditations. These are the smaller searches AI Mode runs on a buyer’s behalf.
- State facts plainly. Name your accreditations, sectors and locations in full sentences. A hypothetical line such as “we clean 40 GP surgeries across West Yorkshire” is easier to cite than “trusted by healthcare clients”.
- Show proof. Case studies with numbers, named testimonials and reviews give an AI answer something to point to. Generic claims give it nothing.
- Keep your details consistent. Your name, address and phone number should match across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and sector directories.
This is the core of generative engine optimisation: direct answers, clear entity data and verified credentials that an AI system can summarise as a trust source.

How do you track AI Mode visibility?
Track AI Mode in two ways: Google’s own Search Console data, and regular manual tests of the questions your buyers ask. Search Console tells you which pages appear in AI answers. Manual tests tell you who else gets named and how your business is described.
On 3 June 2026 Google launched dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console, showing how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date (Google Search Central). The report shows impressions, not clicks, and AI Mode clicks still sit inside your normal performance totals. Use it to see which pages are being picked up, then compare those pages with your enquiries.
For the manual side, write ten to twenty questions a real buyer would ask, such as “which commercial cleaners in Leeds have CHAS accreditation?”, and run them in AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity each month. Record whether you are named, linked or missing, and who appears instead. Our guide to ranking in Google AI Overviews and our comparison of AI Overviews and Google rankings go deeper on both surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Mode available in the UK?
Yes. Google began rolling out AI Mode in the UK on 28 July 2025. It appears as a tab on the Google Search results page and in the Google app on Android and iOS. UK users do not need to join Search Labs to use it, and businesses do not need to opt in for their pages to be eligible.
What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are short summaries shown above normal results on some searches. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab where the whole page is an AI answer and the searcher can ask follow-up questions. They can use different models, so the same question may produce different answers and links in each.
Will AI Mode reduce my website traffic?
It may reduce casual clicks, because buyers get an answer without visiting a site. The visits that remain tend to come from people further along in their decision. The commercial measure that matters is enquiries and cost per lead, so track those alongside traffic rather than judging AI Mode on visits alone.
How do I get my business into Google AI Mode?
Nobody can guarantee it. Make sure your pages are indexed, answer the questions buyers ask on your service pages, state facts plainly, show proof such as case studies and reviews, and keep your business details consistent online. Google says no special markup or file is needed, so the work is strong SEO done properly.
Talk to the person who does the work
AI Mode changes how buyers search, but not what earns their trust. The firms that get named are the ones with clear answers, real proof and fundamentals done properly. At Lobo Digital, a senior marketer with more than 10 years in B2B, seven of them in-house, runs every account personally. The person you brief is the person who does the work.
