Only 30.5% of UK Google searches now end in a click on anything at all. That is the lowest click rate of the six countries Similarweb measured in 2026, below the US, France and Germany.
Your rankings report probably still looks healthy. Your enquiry form tells a different story.
That gap is what the AI Overviews vs Google rankings question is really about. It is not a technical curiosity for SEO people. It is a lead flow problem, and it is sharper in the UK than in almost any comparable market.
Key takeaways
- UK searchers click less than any other major market studied: 69.5% of Google searches end without a click, according to SparkToro and Similarweb’s 2026 clickstream data.
- AI Overviews do not replace your organic ranking. They sit above it and compete with it for attention.
- Pew Research found people click a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appears, against 15% when it does not.
- Ranking first and being cited inside the AI answer are two separate outcomes. Winning one does not win you the other.
- UK businesses got a formal AI opt-out control before most markets, thanks to regulatory pressure. Using it is rarely the commercially sensible move.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and Google rankings?
An AI Overview is a generated summary that Google places at the top of the results page, built from sources it chooses to cite. Traditional Google rankings are the ordinary blue links underneath. They are two separate placements on the same page, awarded by different logic.
You can rank first and never be cited. You can be cited without ranking anywhere near the top.
Google’s own guidance is blunt on this: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can appear in AI features at all. There is no separate AI index and no special markup that unlocks it.
That is the part most business owners get wrong. They assume the AI answer is just a rewritten version of the number one result. It is not.
Do AI Overviews and traditional rankings appear together?
Yes. On most triggering queries, the AI Overview loads first, the citation links sit inside or beside it, and your organic listing sits below the fold. Nothing about your ranking position changes. What changes is how far a user has to scroll before they see it.
The commercial effect is straightforward. Your position stayed the same. Your share of the screen did not.
This matters most for informational queries, which is where the vast majority of AI Overviews trigger. If your content strategy leans on top-of-funnel guides to fill the pipeline, that is precisely the traffic under pressure. Our full explainer on how AI Overviews are built and what earns a citation covers the mechanics in more depth.
What happens to click-through rate when an AI Overview appears?
It falls, consistently, across every credible study. Pew Research analysed 68,879 real Google searches and found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary was present, against 15% without one. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself.
Ahrefs reached a similar conclusion from a different angle, reporting a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page on keywords with an AI Overview present, based on 300,000 keywords.
The numbers vary by methodology and by sector. The direction never does.
For a UK business, the practical translation is this: the same ranking that generated 100 enquiries a year ago may now generate 60, with no drop in position and nothing wrong with your site.
Is it better to rank number one or be cited in the AI answer?
Neither, on its own. Ranking first without a citation means you are visible but skipped. Being cited without ranking means you are trusted but hard to verify. The businesses holding their lead volume are doing both, and treating them as one job rather than two.
| Ranked #1 in organic results | Cited inside the AI Overview | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it sits | Below the AI answer on triggering queries | Top of the page, before anything else |
| What the user sees | Your title, URL and snippet | Your brand named as a source |
| Click behaviour | Reduced when an AI Overview is present | Low direct click rate, high visibility |
| What it earns you | Traffic and measurable sessions | Brand authority and consideration |
| How you influence it | Traditional SEO fundamentals | Clear, extractable answers and credible sourcing |
Seer Interactive’s analysis found brands cited inside an AI Overview earned meaningfully more organic clicks than uncited brands on the same queries. Being named in the answer does not just protect your visibility. It appears to improve the clicks you still get.
Why does any of this matter for your lead flow?
Because buyers still buy. They are simply doing more of their shortlisting before they ever reach your website. If your name is absent from the answer that shapes that shortlist, you are excluded from the decision without ever knowing a decision happened.
That is the expensive part. A lost click is measurable. A lost consideration is not.
The response is not to abandon rankings. It is to stop treating the ranking as the finish line. That is the core of what GEO and AEO work actually involves: making sure the systems generating the answer have a reason to name you.
Can UK businesses opt out of AI Overviews?
Yes, and UK sites got the option first. In June 2026 the Competition and Markets Authority imposed a conduct requirement on Google covering how publisher content is used in generative AI. Google rolled out a Search generative AI control in Search Console, letting a site exclude itself from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features without leaving Search.
Before that, the only route was preview controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet. Those remove your content from AI features, but they strip your ordinary search snippet at the same time, which is a heavy price for a narrow fix.
Even with the cleaner control available, opting out is rarely commercially sound for an SME. Publishers with paywalls have a genuine argument. A cleaning contractor, letting agent or accountancy practice trying to win enquiries does not. Removing yourself from the surface where buyers form their shortlist is not protection.
The control also currently works at property level only. Page-level control is not required until March 2027.
How do you find out where you actually stand?
Check both surfaces separately, because your rank tracker will not tell you. Search your five most commercially important queries, note whether an AI Overview appears, and note whether you are cited. Then run the same questions through ChatGPT and Perplexity and see who gets named.
It takes an afternoon and it is genuinely revealing. Our guide to checking whether your website is visible in ChatGPT and AI search walks through the process step by step.
Most UK businesses discover the same thing: solid Google positions, and near-total absence from the answers. That is a fixable gap, but only once you can see it.
FAQs
Do I lose traffic if an AI Overview appears for my keyword?
Usually, yes. Pew Research recorded clicks on traditional results dropping from 15% to 8% of visits when an AI summary was present. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% average click-through decline for top-ranking pages. Your position does not change, but fewer people reach you. The loss is heaviest on informational queries and lighter on transactional ones.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Yes. UK sites can use the Search generative AI control in Google Search Console to exclude themselves from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features, following a CMA conduct requirement imposed in June 2026. The older method, snippet directives such as nosnippet, also removes your normal search snippet. For most SMEs, opting out costs more visibility than it protects.
Is this UK-specific or global?
The trend is global, but the UK is at the sharp end. SparkToro and Similarweb found 69.5% of UK Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, the highest of six countries measured, ahead of the US at 68%. UK regulation is also ahead: the CMA has required Google to provide publisher controls and, from December, click data.
Does adding schema markup get me into AI Overviews?
Not directly. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for appearing in AI features beyond standard SEO practice. Structured data helps Google understand your page, and accurate FAQ or Organization markup supports eligibility, but no schema type guarantees a citation. Clear, self-contained answers to real questions do more work.
How do I know if my site is being cited in AI Overviews?
Search Console’s generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI features by page, country and device for accounts that have it, though it does not yet include clicks or queries. Manual checks across Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity remain the most reliable method for a small business, alongside dedicated AI visibility tracking.
